SUMMARY:Workshop on Luminescent Solar Concentrator Photovoltaics (LSC PV)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop on the performance enhancement of Luminescent Solar Concentrator Photovoltaics (LSC PV) will take place on Thursday 14 November 2019 from 9:00h till 17:30h in Building Gemini\, Hall Gemini Z0.05\, at Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven\, the Netherlands. \nIntroduction to the LSC PV Workshop      \nIn the past decade\, there have been great advances in not only the performance\, but also the potential application range of Luminescent Solar Concentrator Photovoltaic (LSC PV) devices.  New inorganic luminophores promise the elimination of reabsorption losses and extended lifetimes and complex organic dyes with large Stokes shifts have been developed in labs. Photonic coatings could significantly decrease surface losses\, plasmonic enhancements can generate more emission and  dye alignment can improve light focusing.  New applications are being developed\, such as switchable ‘smart’ windows\, building integrated PV modules\, daylighting elements\, greenhouses and even hydrogen production with LSCs. With silicon cell efficiencies reaching values close to the theoretical maximum\, LSC PV devices can reach a mature state\, while new solar cell materials also can contribute to improvements in performance and commercialization of LSC PVs. Given this context\, this workshop seeks to bring together the world’s experts in LSC PV research and development for a focused conversation on the performance enhancement of this intriguing device.  Through a series of lectures ranging from fundamental science to device design and from applications to industrial opportunities\, we hope to enliven the debate\, foster new collaborations and tackle barriers that should be lowered or eliminated to create commercially available LSC PV applications with a  good performance. \nIf you are interested in this topic\, conducting research or developing LSC PV elements\, we hope to see you at Eindhoven University of Technology in November! \nAngèle Reinders and Michael Debije \nChairs of this PEARL PV Workshop \nLSC PV devices are plastic lightguides or glass panels topped or embedded with luminescent dyes that absorb sunlight and re-emit it at longer wavelengths.  A significant fraction of this light is trapped in the lightguide\, focusing the escaping light to customized solar cells to convert irradiance into electric power. \nProgram \nThe program of this workshop is available here: OnlineProgramLSCPVWorkshop11112019 \nThe full program booklet can be downloaded here: Workshop on LSC PV COST Action PEARL PV Leaflet Final 11112019 \nAttendance on invitation by e-COST only. \nPublications \nSpeakers and attendees of this workshop are cordially invited to submit their manuscript about LSC PV research to a Special Issue of Applied Sciences (IF: 2.217) for peer review and\, eventually\, publication. For all information see the website of the journal at mdpi.com/si/31457 and this flyer: flyer_lsc_pv \n \nPractical information about the location\, venue and accommodation \nAll practical information is available in this document: CA16235WorkshopLSCPV_14110219_Practical information participants \nBuilding Gemini (numbered 15) is located on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven\, the Netherlands. SUMMARY:Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Please save the date of 14 October 2019 for a Seminar of COST Action PEARL PV in Malta of the topic of \nPV Reliability and Durability \nThe solar photovoltaic (PV) market has experienced an accelerated growth accompanied by remarkable cost declines for solar PV technologies. The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) from solar PV decreased by more than 70% between 2010 and 2017 – reaching the cost range of fossil fuels. As solar PV power systems become increasingly competitive\, constant market growth relies on assurances of performance and durability. \nA well-established quality assurance framework that comprises metrology\, standards\, testing methods\, inspections\, certifications\, accreditation\, among others\, can mitigate development and operational risks\, decrease failure rates and improve the overall performance of solar PV technologies.\nTypically\, it is also difficult for a PV plant owner to investigate technical problems since it requires advanced knowledge about the design of PV modules and systems as well as high-end equipment to measure the impact in terms of performance loss of the various degradation modes which might occur. Failures and performance losses can be associated with different kind of events\, which cannot all be attributed to the technology and its implementation.\nThough\, before one starts digging into the different type of failures and the related performance loss\, the industry and experts should be involved to move all together towards a common nomenclature of failures found in the field.\nHistorical data of performance and failure modes of PV systems are not easily accessible to all market players. These stakeholders have a diverse background and can be categorized as investors (private and public)\, PV plant owners\, asset managers\, EPCs\, O&M operators\, and insurance companies. The reasons behind the difficulty to have access to historical data of PV plants relies in the short time upon which most PV systems have been operational so far. Furthermore\, a tendency exists among system operators and component manufacturers to keep performance and failure data confidential.\nIn addition\, detailed performance data are in most cases not available for PV plants of the residential and commercial market segment as the cost of monitoring is still perceived as an added cost. Finally\, although the description of the failure and corrective measures is common practice in the field of operation and maintenance\, this is not often carried out at a sufficient level of detail for PV systems. However\, for the PV industry\, these performances and failures data are required to have a better understanding of the technical risks\, risk management practices\, and the related economic impacts.\nThis information is also essential to ensure investor confidence and hence to develop a mature and bankable market.\nIn the next years\, as the availability of measured data will exponentially increase\, it will be imperative to build large databases\, as in PEARL-PV\, with a potentially harmonized method to increase the confidence level of the statistical analysis and thus reduce the perceived risks for investors. \n \n  \nAll these aspects are covered by the activities of the PEARL-PV network and will be explored during the seminar where world leading experts in the field will present first hand experience coming from monitoring\, field inspections\, characterization techniques\, etc in order to provide extremely valuable knowledge in the topic of quality and reliability of PV modules and systems. \nDavid Moser \nChair of the Seminar \nThe Seminar’s preliminary program is as follows: \n\n10:30h Welcome for WG2 members of PEARL PV: Gernot Oreski (dr.)\, PCCL\n10:40h Welcome for the whole Action PEARL PV: Angele Reinders (prof.dr.)\, TU/e and UT\, The Netherlands Seminar_COSTActionPEARLPV_14102019\n11:00h Plenary address on PV system degradation: Alessandro Virtuani\, EPFL 2019_AV_PearlPV_Malta_14oct2019\n12:00h Material degradation in PV: Gernot Oreski (dr.)\, PCCL Degradation of Materials – G. SUMMARY:Seminar WG1
DESCRIPTION:MATCHING PV DATA AND PV PERFORMANCE RESEARCH QUESTIONS\nParticipants: In e-COST registered participants of PEARL PV\, in particular active members of WGs and MC members or their substitutes \nNOTE: you are only eligible for reimbursement if you have received (and accepted) the official invitation through e-COST to be expected in August   \nShort description: Working group 1 of Cost Action PEARL PV aims to develop generally accepted approaches and guidelines for the collection of data about the performance of PV modules and PV systems for the whole Action. In this seminar\, we will therefore aim at making an inventory of relevant PV research questions and gaps in knowledge in order to set requirements on data to be collected and analyzed. All WG leaders of this Action will therefore present an overview of the state-of-the-art of research in the field of the specific WG\, and in a discussion session with attendees\, a set of questions and data will be drafted. Together\, they will form the basis of data collection of WG1. \nAmong others results will be presented of a questionnaire which was recently developed and sent out among partners to identify required and available data. All partners had implicitly (and/or explicitly) research questions in their mind while filling out the questionnaire by identifying data to be either absolutely necessary\, highly desired\, or nice to have (or even not required). This demonstrates that rather than collecting as much data as possible\, it is imperative to ask research questions first and subsequently define the required data set that would allow answering the questions properly. \nAgenda:  \n9:00h Welcome for WG1 members of PEARL PV: Wilfried van Sark (prof.dr.)\, Utrecht University\, The Netherlands\n9:05h Welcome for the whole Action PEARL PV: Angele Reinders (prof.dr.)\, TU/e and UT\, The Netherlands\n9:20h Opening address: Nathalie Jaarsma\, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Cyprus\n9:30h Plenary address on PV performance: Josh Stein (dr.)\, Sandia National Laboratories\, USA \n10:30h Break \n11:00h State-of-the-art in PV monitoring\, WG1 aims and tasks: Wilfried van Sark (prof.dr.)\, Utrecht University\, The Netherlands\n11:20h Results of PV data identification questionnaire (Wilfried van Sark)\n11:30h Discussion with all attendees\n11:45h State-of-the-art in Reliability and durability of PV\, WG2 aims and tasks: Gabriele Eder (dr.)
